Dapaah: "...we run the risk of overlooking significant continuities between John and Jesus."

In our attempts to accentuate the distinctiveness of Jesus, we run the risk of overlooking significant continuities between John and Jesus. There is the potential danger to run foul to the same bias that has plagued the application of tools of biblical criticism in Jesus research, especially the criterion of dissimilarity that looks at how Jesus differed from contemporary Judaism or the setting of the early church. While acknowledging the fundamental differences between the two historical figures, we must also be careful not to underestimate the extent of Jesus’ indebtedness to his predecessor and ‘forerunner.’
